What Santiment Is

Santiment is a crypto market intelligence platform that combines on-chain data with social sentiment analysis. The company is based in Switzerland (Santiment AG) and has been publishing crypto analytics since 2016, making it one of the longer-running platforms in the category.^[1]

The core product is Sanbase, the web dashboard where subscribers explore metrics, build charts, and receive alerts. The SAN token was launched in 2018 as part of the platform's utility model, though the primary commercial access is now through subscription rather than token gating.

Santiment's Distinctive Strength

Santiment's differentiation isn't doing on-chain better than Glassnode or social sentiment better than LunarCrush. It's combining both in the same platform with consistent methodology and integrated querying.

1. On-chain + social in one query. Most platforms specialize in one category. Santiment treats them as peer pillars with shared query infrastructure. A trader can chart exchange flows alongside social volume for the same asset in the same interface without switching tools.
2. Weighted sentiment methodology. Santiment's weighted sentiment score filters social signals by account quality, engagement, and historical accuracy before aggregating.^[2] This is more sophisticated than raw social volume and is one of Santiment's most-cited metrics.
3. Developer-activity tracking. Santiment tracks GitHub commits, active contributors, and development activity for hundreds of crypto projects. For users whose work requires both on-chain and sentiment data in integrated form, Santiment is a strong choice. That's a considered statement.

Where Santiment Has Scope Limits

Santiment covers two of five signal pillars well. Where it stops:

• No technical analysis. No RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, chart pattern detection. Technicals-focused traders need TradingView or equivalent alongside Santiment.
• No news intelligence. Santiment's research references events contextually but it's not a news monitoring system.
• No macro integration. Fed policy, DXY, yields, equity correlations aren't part of the coverage.
• Deeper on BTC/ETH. Coverage is strongest for majors; long-tail altcoins have thinner data across both on-chain and social dimensions.
• UI complexity. Sanbase has a lot of features and metrics. First-time users can find the interface cluttered. Mastering the full platform takes time.

A trader using Santiment typically also uses TradingView, a news aggregator, and a macro dashboard. Santiment covers more pillars than Glassnode or CryptoQuant alone, but it still isn't a full five-pillar toolkit.
